Pregnant Women and H1N1 Flu Concerns

Pregnant Women and H1N1 Flu ConcernsDoctors have yet another concern about a possible H1N1 epidemic --- pregnant women. According to the Centers for Disease Control, pregnant women are two to three times more likely to die from H1N1 or swine flu than the average person.

"Any illness that stresses the physiology of the mother stresses the physiology of the baby and an early delivery by c-section or induction might be life-saving for them both," says infectious disease specialist Dr. Salah Bibi of Doctor's Medical Center in Modesto.

The lungs of a pregnant woman often become partially crushed by the baby, and when that same mother contracts H1N1 -- those stressed can fill with fluid, endangering the lives of both mother and child. It is a balancing act for doctors, if they deliver the baby too early, it may not survive. If they deliver too late, the mother may be at risk of death. Dr. Bibi recommends all women get the H1N1 vaccine and call their doctor as soon as symptoms begin to appear.
