Christine Nairn scored in the 89th minute as Canada lost 1-0 to the United States in an international friendly Wednesday. Nairn broke the stalemate after the U.S. capitalized on a Canadian turnover. Angela Hucles' cross from the right was tipped by goalkeeper Erin McLeod, but Nairn, who had just subbed in two minutes earlier, deflected the rebound into the Canadian net for the late winner.
Canadian captain Christine Sinclair failed to register her 100th goal. The Burnaby, B.C., native came close in the 60th minute with a shot from just inside the 18-yard box but U.S. keeper Hope Solo dove to make the save.
"It's frustrating to lose like that," Sinclair said. "It's disappointing, but at the same time this is the best we've played against them in the three games this summer. We're a young team with a new coach and we're only going to get better."
The U.S. took charge early, forcing McLeod of St. Albert, Alta., to make a diving save in the 12th minute against Lindsay Tarpley. McLeod, playing her first international match of the year, was the difference in the first half with terrific saves off Tarpley and Megan Rapinoe.
The Canadians' best scoring chance came early in the second half. Sinclair took a loose ball and passed to Jonelle Filigno of Mississauga, Ont., just outside the penalty area, but Filigno's hard shot sailed high. Notes:
The U.S. women have not lost to the Canadians since 2001 and are 40-3-4 all-time in the series. . . Prior to kickoff, Sinclair was recognized for tying the national record for appearances. Sinclair tied all-time leader Andrea Neil, who is now an assistant coach with the national team under coach Carolina Morace.
