CANADIAN WOZNIAK WINS FIRST-ROUND BELL CHALLENGE MATCH

Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., beat Romanian Edina Gallovits in two sets Tuesday to advance to the second round of the $175,000 Bell Challenge Tier III tennis tournament.

Wozniak, the tournament's fifth seed, beat Gallovits 6-4, 6-3.

 The Canadian will face American qualifier Carly Gullickson, who downed Romania's Ioana Raluca Olaru 7-6, 6-1 on Tuesday, in the second round.Stephanie Dubois of Laval, Que., fell 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to American Angela Haynes in Tuesday's late match.

In other first-round matches: top seed Nadia Petrova of Russia downed compatriot Maria Mokh 6-1, 6-2; Severine Bremond of France shocked fourth-seed Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand 6-2, 7-6; No. 7 Olga Govortsova of Belarus beat American Vania King 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan upset No. 8 Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden 6-3 6-2; Melinda Czink of Hungary defeated No. 9 Sabine Lisicki of Germany 6-2, 5-7, 6-3; Nathalie Dechy of France dumped Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany 6-3, 6-1; and American qualifier Varvara Lepchenko stopped Paraguay's Rossana de los Rios 6-1, 6-3.

In doubles action, the team of Marie-Eve Pelletier of Repentigny, Que., and partner Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa beat No. 1 tandem Dechy and American Bethanie Mattek 7-6, 7-5.
