Milan Luthria is all set to recreate the Chennai of the 80s in Film City for his upcoming movie, ‘The Dirty Picture’. The movie is based on the life of Silk Smitha who, was a southern sensation and was popularly known as a ‘soft porn’ actress. Vidya Balan will be seen playing the lead role of Silk Smitha. The film will also star actors like Nasseruddin Shah and Tusshar Kapoor.
The director is so thrilled about the movie, that he has recreated the magic of Chennai on the sets at Film City. Everyone is seen dressed in ‘lungis’ and they start their day by having idlis in breakfast.
The art and production team of ‘The Dirty Picture’ did an extensive tour of Chennai, Mysore, Pondicherry, Ooty and Hyderabad and they took a number of photographs so that they could understand the lifestyle of the people living there.
Since Chennai, has gone through a number of geographical changes from the ‘80s, they had to recreate the location on the sets manually. Huge cut-outs of Naseer, who plays a Tamil movie star, have been placed on the sets. Even old taxis and auto rickshaws have been painted and the number plates have also been changed as Chennai was called Madras at that time.
Recreating the yesteryear’s magic for a film is not something new for Milan Luthria. Even in his last film, 'Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai’, he had created the Bombay of the 80s.
